ABULUG, CAGAYAN – Troops from the Philippine Marine Corps and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) strengthened camaraderie through a cultural and tactical exchange during a Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) held on April 27, 2026, at the Marine Depot in Barangay Bunga, Abulug, Cagayan.

The activity involved personnel from the 10th Marine Rifle Battalion (10MRBn) of the 4th Marine Brigade and their counterparts from the 2nd Regimental Landing Team, Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade (ARDB), Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, as part of Exercise Balikatan 41-2026.

The session showcased the rich martial traditions of both nations. Philippine Marines introduced Pekiti-Tirsia Kali, a renowned Filipino martial art emphasizing edged weapons, empty-hand combat, and close-quarters fighting. In return, JGSDF personnel demonstrated traditional Japanese martial arts techniques and shared their expertise in discipline, defense, and combat movement.

More than a skills exchange, the SMEE served as a platform to foster mutual respect, trust, and stronger ties between the two forces.

The activity concluded successfully, exemplifying the spirit of cooperation, friendship, and partnership that defines Exercise Balikatan.
